Who could imagine life without the famous Pizza & Subs calzone? Yet before 1978, the popular East Coast treat was virtually unknown in the Quad Cities. That’s when a New Jersey family introduced this flavourful Italian entrée to area diners. At first there was just one calzone: a zesty blend of ham, sausage, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses. That all changed in 1987 when Joaquin Espejo acquired Pizza & Subs after leaving a career in Information Systems Management. Joaquin and Rose Espejo kicked off the restaurant’s grand opening with a brand-new item - the Taco calzone. This was just the first of many delicious creations from the Pizza & Subs kitchen. Over the years more than 15 new calzones have been created for the enjoyment of our guests, including Garden, Reuben and Veggie calzones. Our best-in-the-Quad Cities pizzas and calzones are baked in a deck pizza oven. Each week we prepare more than 35 gallons of calzone sauce, use nearly 600 pounds of flour and another 600 pounds of mozzarella cheese to create our hand-made calzones and pizzas. Only the finest ingredients are used in all our freshly-made menu items. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Your dining experience is important to us and our entire staff. It’s family involvement - the kind you won’t find in any chain - that makes a big difference. Our other children, Maria, Rebecca and Michael, have all worked at P&S. Rebecca designed our logo while just an eighth grader. Even the décor has a family touch. The striking color photographs of Italy that grace the walls of our dining rooms were taken by us during our trip to visit Rose’s relatives. We take great pride in serving the best quality food.
